Collection Removal

Collection accounts must be removed from your credit report after 7 years. However, the 7-year period starts from the date the debt first went into collections, not from the date you paid it off.

Description

There are a few ways to remove a collection from your credit report:

  • Pay the debt in full. This is the best option, as it will remove the collection account from your credit report within 30 days.
  • Negotiate a pay-for-delete agreement. This is an agreement with the collection agency to delete the collection account from your credit report in exchange for payment. However, pay-for-delete agreements are not always successful, and the collection agency is not legally obligated to remove the account from your credit report.
  • Dispute the debt. If you believe the debt is not valid, you can dispute it with the collection agency and the credit bureaus. If the credit bureaus find that the debt is invalid, they will remove it from your credit report.
  • Wait for the debt to fall off your credit report. Collection accounts must be removed from your credit report after 7 years. However, the 7-year period starts from the date the debt first went into collections, not from the date you paid it off.

If you are considering paying off a collection, be sure to get a written confirmation from the collection agency that the account has been paid in full and that it will be removed from your credit report.

If you are considering negotiating a pay-for-delete agreement, be sure to get the agreement in writing before you make any payments. This agreement should include the amount you are paying, the date the debt will be considered paid in full, and the terms of any payment plan.
